All the glorious things about sisterhood are represented on this album. Kate, Lenora, Nnenna and Lois possess the kind of sisterhood that is palpable and audible.”

About Us

In the context of construction, "sistering" refers to reinforcing an existing structural member, like a joist or beam, by adding a new, identical member alongside it and fastening them together. This process strengthens the original member and helps distribute the load.

The Sistering captures the pure magic that unfolds when four accomplished jazz artists come together to uplift and inspire one another—on and off the stage. This in-the-making collection features eleven powerful compositions: two penned by each artist, two co-written, and one imaginative reworking of a beloved jazz standard. Though still in progress, the music already reveals a beautifully interconnected journey through themes of family, love, loss, and badassery—rendering the project both a memoir and a cultural mirror.

Infused with soul, folk, funk, and spoken word, The Sistering ventures across wide musical terrain, with improvisation at its heart. Song titles like “Combat Boots and Glass Slippers” by Lenora, “Circle” by Kate, “Follow the Stream” by Lois, and “A Brother Just Like You” by Nnenna hint at the emotional depth and narrative spirit behind the music. As it continues to take shape, the project stands as a vibrant testament to the power of creative alliance—and it needs the support of those who love (and will come to love) the group and their music to be fully realized.

Accompanied by a world-class jazz quartet—Miki Hayama (piano), Keith Ganz (guitar), John Brown (bass), and Kobie Watkins (drums)—and joined by featured players Dexter Moses (alto/tenor sax), Shaena Ryan (baritone sax), Lynn Grissett (trumpet), and Robert Trowers (trombone), The Sistering is already taking shape as a powerful testament to unity and artistry. The vocalists and their compositions shine individually and collectively, proving that, as in construction, “sistering” in music strengthens, supports, and elevates. Though the melody has been written and the rhythm is set in motion, this song is still in progress—and now calls on those who love, and will come to love, this music to help bring it to its final crescendo.
